1) Please tell us about yourself.
Hello everyone… My name is Thamarai, a wifey to a cool dude and a mother to my 3-year-old bubbly diva, Praveena. I have graduated with a Master in Counselling from Monash University in Melbourne as I am really passionate to be part of the helping profession. I have also acquired certification to be a professional Makeup Artist. Currently, I work as a school counsellor and it empowers me to transform many young lives especially walking through their educational journey. I always use the famous ‘idiom’ about silver lining (every cloud has a silver lining) for them to feel hopeful as difficult time’s leads to better pathway.
2) Please tell us about your pageant history
I took part in my Ever-first Prestigious National Beauty Pageant with Lumiere International – Mrs Singapore Worldwide and it has given me the opportunity to be crowned as the 1st-runner up in 2017 and I also clinched the title of the Most Advertiser’s Queen Award and the Honourable Asia Pacific Queen of Substance 2017 (Women Inspirational Award). This experience had invigorated me with many experiences/skills such as being able to bring out my personality that shines, gaining high self-confidence, exercising emotional intelligence, serving the people and community with pride and passion, and being the queen who inspires and what makes it even more special is holding the Mrs Title (Empowering Married Women).
3) Who is your role model and why?
My role model is definitely my beloved father Mr Palaniyappa, who has been a good role model for me, as he was presented an honourable award for an Act of Honesty by Singapore Tourism Board in 1984 by a local Minister. This will be a legacy for the next generation to follow through. My father has inculcated many positive values into his children by living as a role model and to be courageous about holding your fort, no matter how hard it gets. He also lived up to his convictions, by exercising the power of altruism, helping his friends and loved ones as he enjoys to reach out and doing a good deed for another human being. My father has always stood by our side and showered us with unconditional love. I have learnt and engaged myself positively by offering compassion and bringing sunshine into the lives of others with the strong guidance from my father. I love you papa!
4) Who inspired you to represent your country and compete in Mrs Asia Pacific Beauty Pageant 2018?
It is really evident that there is precedent of World prestigious beauty queens who have been forthcoming towards serving the underprivileged with their warm-hearted nature. It is not just about displaying the glitz and glamour of a beauty queen but living up to the responsibility about having to contribute to the society/nation positively. It is really an amazing opportunity to represent my country (Singapore) in an international platform and the good news gladdened my heart and made my dreams come true!
5) what is the first thing you wish to do, if you win the top 5 main international title?
I really wish to contribute to my local community and having this platform with an International title, will enable me to play a vital role to contribute to my fellow Singaporeans. This sense of achievement needs to be earned through hard work, dedication and commitment and by exhibiting my accomplishments it will motivate many others. Having a world prestigious title will empower me to have a breakthrough to serve many other communities at the other parts of the world.
6) What is the biggest challenge you face as a working woman today?
Striving for the work life balance, as we are continuously working towards meritocracy and it aspires us to reach the highest level based on the fast-paced life in Singapore. My personal take is, Life is never always smooth sailing but the thunders, storms and rain had contributed to who I am today with a sky that is filled with rainbow and sunlight to strengthen my soul. I had an enriching life experience and it made me grow as a Confident woman of positive influence, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister and a positive role model to touch many young lives out there. Ultimately, I will continue to fully grow as a woman in every perspective, being beautiful Inside Out.
7) if you have the power to do anything you wished to improve the status of women in our country, what would you do? And why?
Empowering and inspiring women in the various professional career fields by advocating for them and voicing about hope and resilience. Women have the ability to create and nurture their young ones but they are also prone to face struggles and challenges. I wish to relay the powerful message that, we must aspire to achieve our goals and pursue our dreams despite our heavy commitments. A woman plays various roles in the society such as being responsible wives, being a mother and also being career-oriented with other commitments, however we should also strive towards Excellency and enhance our Position/Status whenever opportunity arises by building resilience and tenacity. The true meaning of Women Empowerment was certainly perpetuated through Advertence.
